Week 3

Please read through all the instructions before starting. This is the week 3 of the 16-week CAL.  The patterns for the first 2 innings/weeks can be found:

PDF print button as well as links to the video tutorial, UK term pattern, and Dutch translation can be found at the bottom of this page.

Pattern written in American crochet terms by a right-handed crocheter

Abbreviations:

  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • yo = yarn over
  • sp = space

3rd Inning – Block Stitches for Around-the-BLOCK

You will start Week 3 with {multiples of 3 + 2} stitches.

  • Examples: 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, etc. per side

3rd inning consists of 3 sets of 2 rows (Rows 10 & 11, 12 & 13, 14 & 15) plus one row (Row 16) of single crochet. These 7 rows will add a total of 21 stitches per side to your block.

Colors – As always, you can complete the CAL with just one color. But if you are using different colors, there are a few ways to mix colors in this week’s pattern. The above sample used different color stitches for the block stitches made of dc’s (Rows 11, 13, and 15) and just one color for the accent stitches made of sc’s (Rows 10, 12, and 14).

My Tropical Garden Sample Colors (pictured at the top of the page):

  • Row 10: Fuchsia
  • Row 11: Light Turquoise
  • Row 12: Fuchsia
  • Row 13: Violet
  • Row 14: Fuchsia
  • Row 15: Olive
  • Row 16: Canary

Alternate Color Idea – As you see below, the stitches are also super cute when you use just one color for the block stitches and different colors for the accent stitches.

Week 3 White

Special Note on Stitch Count – I normally recommend everyone to count each side and each row but this week’s stitch count has confused some people, including myself.  I had an error on the original stitch count released on August 23 but this has since been corrected.  So at this point, if the stitch count does not make sense to you, my recommendation is just follow the pattern.  At the end, you should have added a total of 21 stitches during this inning.

(Rows 10 & 11 combined add 7 stitches per side)

Row 10:

  1. (sc, ch 3, sc) in the corner,
  2. **ch 2, skip 2 st, sc in next**,
  3. Repeat ** to **, ch 2 at the end of the row,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for all 4 sides,
  5. sl st to the first (standing) st

Row 11 – on this row, you will only be working on the chain spaces:

  1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner,
  2. 3 dc in each ch sp,
  3. Repeat 1 & 2 for all 4 sides,
  4. sl st to the first (standing) st

(Rows 12 & 13 combined add 6 stitches per side)

Row 12:

  1. (sc, ch 3, sc) in the corner,
  2. **ch 2, skip 3 dc from the previous row, sc in the space between the groups of 3 dc**,
  3. Repeat ** to **, ch 2 at the end of the row,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for all 4 sides,
  5. sl st to the first (standing) st

Row 13 – on this row, you will only be working on the chain spaces:

  1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner,
  2. 3 dc in each ch sp,
  3. Repeat 1 & 2 for all 4 sides,
  4. sl st to the first (standing) st

Rows 14 & 15 are repeats of rows 12 & 13 (and combined add 6 st per side)

  1. (sc, ch 3, sc) in the corner,
  2. **ch 2, skip 3 dc from the previous row, sc in the space between the groups of 3 dc **,
  3. Repeat ** to **, ch 2 at the end of the row,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for all 4 sides,
  5. sl st to the first (standing) st

Row 15 – on this row, you will only be working on the chain spaces:

  1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner,
  2. 3 dc in each ch sp,
  3. Repeat 1 & 2 for all 4 sides,
  4. sl st to the first (standing) st

Row 16 (will add 2 st per side):

  1. (sc, ch 3, sc) in the corner,

Total # of stitches added for Week 3 = 21

Examples: 53, 59, 65, 71, 77, 83, 89, 95, 101, 107, 113, 119, 125, 131, 137, 143, 149, etc. per side
