Around-the-Bases CAL – 10th Inning

Congratulations on making it to the extra innings!!

When people ask me what Around-the-Bases afghan is like, I tell them it is like making a giant granny square with pretty stitches.  So here they are, granny stitches.


Please read through all the instructions before starting. This is the week 10 of the 16-week CAL.  The patterns for the first 9 innings/weeks can be found:

My Tropical Garden Sample Colors:

  • Row 43: White
  • Row 44: Light Turquoise
  • Row 45: Light Green

Pattern written in American crochet terms by a right-handed crocheter

Abbreviations:

  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • yo = yarn over
  • sp = space

10th Inning – Grannies

It is hard to count the stitches after the 9th inning, but everyone should be starting this week with {multiples of 3}.

Examples: 117, 123, 129, 135, 141, 147, 153, 159, 165, 171, 177, 183, 189, 195, 201, 207, 213, etc. per side

We will work on 3 rows (Rows 43-45), which will add a total of 9 stitches.


Row 43 (will add 2 st per side) – this is the same as Rows 39 and 41 from Week 9. Work only on the stitches indicated:

  1. (dc, ch 3, dc) in the corner, skip the first 2 dc’s from the previous row,
  2. ** dc in the first dc of the 5-dc fan,
  3. ch 1,
  4. crossing over in front of the dc just made, dc in the first st you skipped (cross st made),
  5. ch 1,
  6. sc in the center (3rd dc) of the 5-dc fan,
  7. ch 1**,
  8. Repeat ** to **, dc in the last dc of the row (corner dc from the previous row), ch 1, cross over and make a dc in the last dc of the 5-dc fan from the previous row,
  9. Repeat 1 through 8 for the remaining 3 sides,
  10. sl st to the first st          [added 2 st per side]

Row 44 (will add 4 st per side):

  1. (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the corner,
  2. ** 3 dc in the 1-ch space of the cross st from the previus row,
  3. 3 dc in the sc from the previous row **,
  4. Repeat ** to ** to the end of the row, 3 dc in the 1-ch space of the last cross st from the previous row,
  5. Repeat 1 through 4 for the remaining 3 sides,
  6. sl st to the first st          [added 4 st per side]

Row 45 (will add 3 st per side) – on this row, you are only working on the stitches indicated:

  1. (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the corner,
  2. ** 3 dc in the space between 3-dc groups from the previous row **,
  3. Repeat ** to ** to the end of the row,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for the remaining 3 sides,
  5. sl st to the first st          [added 3 st per side]

Total # of stitches added for Week 10 = 9

Examples: 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 156, 162, 168, 174, 180, 186, 192, 198, 204, 210, 216, 222, etc. per side
