Around-the-Bases CAL – 11th Inning

Week 11 cover©ChiChi Allen 2015

You may know by now that I started this “Around-the-Bases” afghan while watching Texas A&M University‘s baseball games.  Baseball games at Texas A&M is a hoot – fans rally and heckle throughout the game.  And each player gets a “shout out” when they batter up.  One of the players’ name is JB Moss and when he comes up to bat, we shout out “Like a Moss!”  So that’s what reminded me of this pretty stitch.  It’s a simple stitch but you can get a different look by the way you place colors.  Hope you have fun finding the color combos that fit your liking!

Please read through all the instructions before starting. This is the week 11 of the 16-week CAL.  The patterns for the first 10 innings/weeks can be found:

PDF print button as well as links to the video tutorial, UK term pattern, and Dutch translation can be found at the bottom of this page.

11th Inning – Moss Stitch

Week 11

We are starting with {multiples of 3} that are also even numbers.

Examples: 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 156, 162, 168, 174, 180, 186, 192, 198, 204, 210, 216, 222, etc. per side

We will complete 5 rows (Rows 46-50), which will add a total of 9 stitches.

Colors: Moss Stitch works up fast but is really fun to make, especially with multiple colors. My sample above is made with different colors for each row. As pictured below, it also looks good with 2 colors, giving out a slightly different look that resembles vertical stripes.

Week 11 2 colors

My Tropical Garden Sample Colors:

This was a yarn busting week for me.  I used some left-over yarn from other projects.

  • Row 46: Canary
  • Row 47: Violet
  • Row 48: Petrol
  • Row 49: Olive
  • Row 50: Light Pink

Tension:  Watch your tension this week.  If your afghan is a little wavy/raffley after the last inning, you can use a little tighter tension.  If your afghan is starting to turn in the corners, you may want to try to loosen up your tension around the corners.

Row 46 (will add 2 st per side):

  1. (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner,
  2. sc in each st,
  3. Repeat 1 and 2 for the remaining 3 sides,
  4. sl st to the first st         [added 2 st per side]

Row 47 (will add 1 st per side) – notice you will skip a total of 2 st’s at the beginning of each row, after corner stitches:

  1. (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner, skip the first (hidden) st,
  2. ** ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next st **,
  3. Repeat ** to ** until the end of a row, ch 1,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for the remaining 3 sides,
  5. sl st to the first st         [added 1 st per side]

Row 48 (will add 2 st per side):

  1. (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner,
  2. ** ch 1, sc in the next ch-1 sp **,
  3. Repeat ** to ** until the end of a row, ch 1
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for the remaining 3 sides,
  5. sl st to the first st         [added 2 st per side]

Row 49 (will add 2 st per side):

Repeat Row 48         [added 2 st per side]

Row 50 (will add 2 st per side):

Repeat Row 48          [added 2 st per side]

Total # of stitches added for Week 11 = 9
