14th Inning

Around-the-Bases CAL – 14th Inning

©ChiChi Allen 2015

Victory is near but don’t put your baseball cleats away just yet as we will be adding spikes this week!  This week’s stitch is inspired by Spike Stitch from the “Crochet Step by Step” book by Sally Harding.

If you are an experienced crocheter and would like to add more rows from the previous innings and/or skip this week at your own risk, a couple of tips can be found at the end of this post.

Please read through all the instructions before starting. This is the week 14 of the 16-week CAL.  The patterns for the first 13 innings/weeks can be found:

PDF print button as well as links to the video tutorial, UK term pattern, and Dutch translation can be found at the bottom of this page.

14th Inning – Spiked Stitch

Week 14

We are again staying with the same team as in the previous two innings.

  • Team A is starting the 14th Inning with a {multiples of 6 + 1} number of stitches per side.

Examples: 151, 163, 175, 187, 199, 211, 223, 235, 247, etc. per side

  • Team B will start the inning with {multiples of 6 – 1} stitches per side.

Examples: 155, 167, 179, 191, 203, 215, 227, 239, etc. per side

Both teams will work on 4 rows and add 6 stitches per side (Rows 59 – 62).

Row 59 (will add 2 st per side)

  1. (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner,
  2. sc in each st,
  3. Repeat 1 and 2 for all sides
  4. sl st to the first st          [added 2 st per side]

Row 60 (will add 1 st per side)

  1. (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner,
  2. skip the first (hidden) st,
  3. sc in each st,
  4. Repeat 1 through 3 for all sides
  5. sl st to the first st          [added 1 st per side]

Please choose the appropriate instructions for Row 61.

This is the only row that is different between the 2 teams this inning.

On this row, you will be working into stitches from Rows 58 (the last row of the last inning) and 59 (the first row of this week’s inning).  Work slowly on this row, making sure not to skip any stitches.  Your stitches should stand straight up.

Adding Extra Rows

If you want to make your afghan bigger by repeating your favorite innings, and if you consider yourself an experienced hooker, the end of this inning and/or the next inning is a good place to do so. But please note that this has not been tested and you will be adding stitches at your own risk.  (Ever so talented Esther added a few rounds.  You can see it here.)

Remember some stitches in this CAL rippled the afghan a little (for example, block stitch from the 3rd inning) while others pulled it in (for example, star stitch from the 4th inning) – you may need to repeat a few innings together in order for your afghan to stay flat with appropriate angles.

You will also need to adjust your stitch count at the beginning and end of your additions. Starting stitch counts needed were noted at the beginning of each inning and noted below. Generally speaking, you can adjust your stitch count by adding or skipping stitches in the corners. Just as you prepared your starting center block, adjust your stitch counts before repeating your desired innings.  (Tips on increasing stitches)

Here are the stitch counts for each of the previous innings:

  • 1st Inning – Shell Pillars – {multiples of 6 – 2}
  • 2nd Inning – Popcorns – {multiples of 6 + 2}
  • 3rd Inning – Block Stitch – {multiples of 3 + 2}
  • 4th Inning – Star Stitch – {multiples of 3 + 2}
  • 5th Inning – Cross Hatch
  • 6th Inning – Back Post Stitch – {multiples of 4}
  • 7th Inning – 3 x 1 Cable Stitch – {multiples of 4 + 2}
  • 8th Inning – Chained Fences – {multiples of 4 + 2}
  • 9th Inning – Asian Fans
    • Team A – {multiples of 6 + 1}
    • Team B – {multiples of 6 – 1}
  • 10th Inning – Grannies – {multiples of 3}
  • 11th Inning – Moss Stitch – {multiples of 3} that is an even number
  • 12th Inning – Ballpark Fences
    • Team A – {multiples of 4 – 1}
    • Team B – {multiples of 4 + 1}
  • 13th Inning – Home Runs
    • Team A – {multiples of 6 – 2}
    • Team B – {multiples of 6 + 2}

End your addition with an odd number of stitches per side as the 15th inning will require an odd number of stitches to start.

Next week, we will claim victory!!

    Thank you for this great project. This inning isn’t in the CAL category. It isn’t showing with the others.
