Howdy from wild-flower blooming beautiful Texas!
CAL – Crochet A Long group on Facebook that graciously hosted my Around-the-Bases crochet-along (CAL) last fall is celebrating its first anniversary! Congratulations! It all started with one enthusiast, Laurene, a year ago and they now support over 21,000 crocheters from all around the world. What an amazing work – kudos to all the admins who work tirelessly around the clock to keep this community of support!
To commemorate this great milestone, they just launched a very special CAL called Friends around the World CAL. Starting today for the next 6 months, there will be a pattern for a stitch sampler released at 10 am EST every Tuesday. Each pattern will be published in 10 different languages – English patterns in both US and UK terms and Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish! Each week we will be making a square that is about 12 inches when made with worsted yarn and 9 inches when made with double knit (DK) yarn. They will be roughly 24 squares – they can be bound together at the end to make an afghan.
It can be made with any weight yarn and with as many colors as one would like. As I love soft, squishy afghans, I am using Scheepjes Colour Crafter*, which is a DK weight yarn. It comes in amazing 63 colors and has become my favorite yarn for making baby afghan gifts. It is very light and fluffy – in other words just so perfect for my liking. For this CAL, I chose Urk, Barneveld, and Texel (from left to right, pictured below) and may also add a splash color with Colour Crafter Velvet.
They come in 100 gram (300 meter) balls and I think 2 balls of 3 colors will be plenty to finish all the squares but I have 3 balls each to be safe and also to have enough for binding and adding the border. As with any crochet project, you will need more yarn if using heavier weight yarn such as worsted weight.
According to their official announcement, “They are designed with a beginner in mind and some will teach us new stitches and techniques. This CAL is a great way to try out your favorite designers’ new pattern, discover new designers, learn to read the many design styles and even interpret a graph.” I hear they have an amazing lineup of designers for the next 24+ weeks! The patterns will be translated in a number of languages and it will truly be an “around-the-world” CAL. I am super excited about this CAL and cannot wait to get started!
*Special thanks to Scheepjes for kindly providing me with the yarn for this project!
