Shin-yu Infinity Scarf – Size & Starting Stitch Count

Have you decided on the target length for your Shin-yu (真友 = true friend) Infinity Scarf?  Shin-yu Infinity Scarf is designed to be made with yarn weight of your choice into the length of your preference.  This means you will pick your own scarf length.  (You can google “cowl length” or “infinity scarf” length to get some ideas.)

The pattern will NOT say how many chains to start but rather you will choose your starting chain number in {multiples of 40}.  In other words, you can choose 120, 160, 200, etc. number of stitches, to the length of your linking.

I hope the following info will give you a better idea of how long you might want your infinity scarf and how many stitches you would need to obtain that length.   My advice is to start longer than shorter – it is easier to make it short than make it longer!

Yarn Proportions for Each Part

As you see above, Part 3 would take the most amount of yarn.  Proportions of yarn used are approximately 4:3:5 for Parts 1, 2, and 3.

For example, if I have one skein each of 3 colors, I’d estimate each part would use approximately the following amount of yarn:

  • Part 1: 80% of skein
  • Part 2: 60% of skein
  • Part 3: 100% of skein

Alternatively, if I am using one hank of yarn, I’d estimate each section to use up about the following proportions:

  • Part 1: 1/3 (33%) of total weight
  • Part 2: 1/4 (25%) of total weight
  • Part 3: 5/12 (42%) of total weight
